Capturing Attention: Raising accidents rates involving Road Users

Cycling is a popular sport for many, it is increasingly popular day by day. With the love of sport, many cyclists will ride their bicycles on the road which is also shared.

There are ever increasing number of vehicles on the road, it is very sad to see people lacking of common sense and do not have the sufficient knowledge to “Share our Roads” with other vehicle users.

Hence, these recklessness has caused many unwanted incidences and accidents to happen which caused the lost of innocent lives. There are many accidents happened recently which involved automobiles and cyclists due to the reasons mentioned above.

Below are just two very sad cases which touches our heart dearly and happened nearly exactly ONE year when we just let the matter go, we moved on afterwards with proper planning on "Share Our Roads" Campaign to -

  1. Address the seriousness of the problem
  2. Properly planning to execute out 4 Pillars campaign:
    • Safety measures being reminded to both drivers and cyclists
    • Awareness + Education Campaign goes hand in hand to educate then people become aware thourgh proper events & advertising campaigns
    • Authorities, create opportunities for Government / MOT / JPJ / JKJR dialogues to properly plan and execute out learner drivers training and testing module

Imagine “What could have been, if you would  Courteously WAIT!!!”

Remember they are not just some cyclists who slows you down, they are somebody’s EVERYTHING!!!

Authorities caught the culprits or not, jail them or not, could any penalties bring them back to LIFE ???

** A compilation of cases from different sources, thank you for reporting out loud.

Recent Story: Doctor had glass of wine before crash

by BaikBiker | Posted on Tuesday, March 27th, 2012
A doctor, who caused the death of a cyclist two years ago, had a glass of red wine before the fatal crash, a court heard yesterday.

Teo Tiong Kiat, 64, is accused of a hit-and-run accident along Clementi Road at about 9.25pm on March 21, 2010.

He admitted to causing the death of Mr Mok Chee Kong, 35, by failing to keep a proper lookout and suddenly swerving from the centre lane into the left lane of the road, hitting the freelance writer’s bicycle, reported The Straits Times. Mr Mok died three days later.

Teo also pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to another cyclist, cook Bertram Leong Poh Meng, 24.
He claimed trial to three remaining charges – failing to stop after the accident, failing to give help, and removing his car without lawful authority.

Teo returned to the scene half an hour later.

A Traffic Police corporal observed that he smelled of alcohol and his eyes were bloodshot.
Teo completed the breathalyser test on his second attempt. The result was “warning”.
He was taken to Traffic Police headquarters for another test, which he passed.

Doctor did not realise he caused accident

by BaikBiker | Posted on Wednesday, March 28th, 2012
A doctor said he did not know he had hit two cyclists during an accident when he lost control of his car and ended up killing one of the riders.

General practitioner Teo Tiong Kiat, 64, told the court on Tuesday that he thought his car must have hit the two cyclists when he walked back to the accident scene along Clementi Road on March 21, 2010.

The Straits Times reported that Teo admitted to causing the death of freelance writer Benjamin Mok Chee Kong, 35, and injuring another cyclist, Bertram Leong Poh Meng, 24, by failing to keep a proper lookout when swerving from the centre to the left lane.

He testified that he was driving along Clementi Road on his way home after dinner when he felt the car swerving to the left and wobbling.

He said he lost control of the car and heard a loud sound.
When he finally got it together, he drove down the slip road to Upper Bukit Timah Road and parked at the carpark to inspect his badly damaged bonnet, windscreen and roof.

The Straits Times reported that Teo thought it was amazing that his car was so badly damaged and yet he did not have an injury.

Later, his office manager came to the carpark and pointed out the missing front number plate.

Teo then walked back to the scene where he saw police and his number plate by the side of the road.
Teo said that if he had realised that he was involved in an accident, he would have helped those injured at the time.

“I also want to add that as a doctor, it is my duty and my training to render assistance to the poor, and to the sick, all the more so if I had known that I had caused injury to somebody, I would have definitely rendered my assistance,” he said.

Hong Kong

      Terribly sad news

On Sunday news started filtering through of a bike accident that resulted in the death of Yeoh Phee Keong (PK). PK was cycling on the Mex Hwy and was hit from behind by a car.

Many of us ride that same route week in week out, it could have been any one of us. Until now I'd considered this road one of the safest in Malaysia.

My deepest sympathies and condolences go out to PK's family, this is indeed a tragic and deeply saddening loss.

Having been involved in a similar accident that could have also ended my life (I "luckily" got away with four fractured vertebrae) I feel compelled to say that it would be easy for us all to say enough is enough, stay off the roads and ride our trainers in the safety of our own homes or even give up altogether. However, I doubt that is what PK would have wanted, we know that what we do has risks attached but so do many things in life including obesity and being sedentary. I summed up my thoughts at the end of a reflective blog post about my accident in 2006 . In short, we can't wrap ourselves up in cocoon's nor can we do this for our beloved family members. This is not the way to LIVE life.

Of course this doesn't bring back PK but I will say this, I'd wager that that PK lived a life more fulfilled, more complete and happier than the majority of the world who choose to be spectators rather than participators. RIP Yeoh Phee Keong our thoughts are with you

Sadly it is so true that we always take things and take people for granted just because we are used to it, used to them. No matter how much we say and act appreciative, it is always when you lost the things, lost the people that are so close so dear to you when you truly felt the missing presence. You want to hold on to the once shared memories, shared laughs, jokes, smiles etc. Many words left unsaid, you wished you could have said it earlier but now the moment is lost forever.
